About the event
Calling all artists!!! Please join the Friends of Cedarmere for the 2023 Plein Air Art Contest. October 7, 8 & 9. Register to participate and have your canvas officially stamped on October 7th & 8th from 9am to 12pm at Cedarmere.
EVENT IS RAIN OR SHINE!!! Weather looks good for Sunday and Monday and covered areas on the porches are available for artists wanting to paint on Saturday.
Registration fee is $35.
Contest Rules:
Registration is IN PERSON ONLY.
Please arrive between 9am - 12pm on October 7th or 8th to register and have your canvas or paper stamped by event staff.
Registration fee is $35 and can be paid online, or in person by check.
All submisions must be competed "en plain air", during the contest dates, at the contest location.
The maximum submission size is 18" x 24" canvas or paper.
Canvas must be stamped by Friends of Cedarmere staff PRIOR to beginning your work.
Staff will be on site to stamp your paper or canvas on Saturday October 7th, and Sunday October 8th between 9am - 12pm.
Cedarmere is open to the public from dawn until dusk for artists to work throughout the day.
Accepted mediums include: oil, acrylic, watercolor, and pastel
(No photography or sculpture)
Each participant is limited to one (1) submission.
Paintings must be submitted on or before October 9th between 2pm - 5pm, unless pre-arranged otherwise with staff.
Note about framing - artwork can be submitted framed or unframed, but please be aware that FRAMING WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED BY THE JUDGE AS A CRITERIA FOR AWARDING PRIZES. If the artist wishes to submit artwork with a frame, the framing may be done before the work is submitted prior to the regukar cutoff time and date. If that is not possible that artist may make special arrangements with staff to take the artwork home, frame it, and return it at a pre-arranged time and date. The artwork WILL BE PHOTOGRAPHED TO ENSURE NO FURTHER WORK HAS BEEN DONE BY THE ARTIST AT HOME.

All submissions will be made available for sale. Artist may specify minimum price for painting in advance. Otherwise, Friends of Cedarmere will determine a starting price.
The Friends of Cedarmere will process all art sales with 50% of proceeds being retained as a donation to the Cedarmere Mill Restoration Project.
Participants will receive 50% of the proceeds from the sale of their piece. Unsold pieces will be returned to the artist.
Judging will be done by Stephanie Jacobson - Art Professor at St. John's University and Instructor at The Art Guild of Port Washington.
Awards will be distributed to the artists during the WIlliam Cullen Bryant Birthday and Poetry Event to be held Sunday November 5, 2023, 3pm - 6pm at the Cedarmere Mill.
